Porn Destroys, But Christ Heals

Porn is a massive $12 billion dollar industry. Sex sells and it’s ironic because our money says, “In God We Trust” on it, but the god of America is sex and on its altar we sacrifice our innocence, image, and families for our lustful passions. Everything in our culture revolves around sex including movies, books, music, and TV shows. Porn is more accessible now than ever before with smart phones, tablets, and computers. Porn is often joked about and normalized. If you are a man or woman in your late 20’s and were to tell someone outside the church that you have never had sex, let alone looked at porn, they would laugh at you as if you are missing out on life itself, but you are not missing out. Sexual immorality and porn devalues the human being to nothing but an idol instrument to be used in the worship of our desires and pleasures. When we do this we not only strip image bearers of their clothes, but we also strip them of their personhood, their identity, and we devalue them to just objects. Francis Schaeffer writes in, Whatever Happened to the Human Race?:

“If man is not made in the image of God, nothing then stands in the way of inhumanity. There is no good reason why mankind should be perceived as special. Human life is cheapened. We can see this in many of the major issues being debated in our society today: abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, the increase of child abuse and violence of all kinds, pornography ... , the routine torture of political prisoners in many parts of the world, the crime explosion, and the random violence which surrounds us.”

We see the side effects of our cultures sexual revolution everywhere with broken families, abortion, insecurities, emptiness, violence, brokenness, and divorce. All of this is a result of the failure to see others and us in the way God sees us. We fail to understand that we are created in the image of God. Those we see stripped naked on our screen and in our fantasies are made in the image of God. Our body is a temple and is meant to worship the true God, but we dethrone Him and replace Him with false idols of sexually immorality.

“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” - 1 Corinthians 6:18-20

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”- Romans 12:1-2

If we are under Christ why do we let ourselves devalue the Lord’s image? We need to repent and ask God to change our heart, mind, and eyes to see true beauty. When we do this our spouse becomes our standard and definition of true beauty in such a way that all fall short of the beauty of God and our spouse. If we do not see them as such we must pillage the world’s standards from our mind and have the Spirit transform our mind with truth. When this happens we find the world is the one who can’t live up to God’s definition of beauty. He is beauty and truth therefore He determines what is beautiful.

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” - Proverbs 31:30

“She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her.” - Proverbs 3:15

Christ is enough when we see things through the same lens of God. All worldly pleasures crumble under the unsurmountable beauty and glory of Christ. Porn will never fully satisfy. It will only leave us dissatisfied and thirsty for more. We can never quench our thirst. But Christ can. He is the living water and the bread of life that supplies our needs in ways nobody ever can. We have to fight it daily, which means striking down sin with the Spirit of His word and running with fixed eyes on Christ...our prize. We must also understand that we can’t do it alone or on our own strength, we can’t do it without the aid of the Holy Spirit working through us. We can have the highest settings on our Covenant Eyes software, throw away our phone, disconnect from the Internet, and live in a cabin in the middle of nowhere and still struggle with sexual sin, because after all the years of abuse our minds are still seared with unholy files and images of our lustful passions.

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
- Ephesians 6:11

“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” - Psalm 119:11

“But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” - 1 Timothy 6:11-12

“And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
- Galatians 5:24

Praise God that by His grace through the power of the Holy Spirit, through the reading of His word, and by surrounding ourselves with Godly men and women who have been through the same thing, we can do battle and win for the glory and beauty of Christ Jesus. It is not easy and it is a long road, but in the process God is using this to sanctify us, our spouse, our family, and our church, which is the bride of Christ. A bride He shed His own blood for. The same Christ who faced every temptation and conquered it, the same Christ who died and rose from the grave giving us the whole armor of God, His word, and His Spirit as a helper. That is enough, because Christ is enough.
